MxNxSTxR, the side project of Ty Dolla $ign, joins forces with Destructo, Thundercat and Channel Tres for “What You Need.”
Clocking in at almost five minutes, the single follows up MxNxSTxR and Destructo’s “All Of Me” from 2022. Infused with hints of R&B and disco funk, “What You Need” welcomes the warmer days ahead. The dance-ready offering features thick slabs of bass and falsetto from Thundercat, along with an effortless verse from Channel Tres.
The idea for the track first came about during a writing session during the pandemic lockdowns in 2020. “What You Need” sees the four artists reunite; Ty and Destructo’s collaborative relationship dates back to 2016, while the former and Thundercat linked up for “Fair Chance.” Thundercat and Channel Tres also linked up for last year’s “Candy Paint,” and the latter teamed with Ty for “Holy Moly” in the same year.
